Firstly, I would like to apologise for the delay in updating the race result from Ironman 70.3 World Championship Mooloolaba, Australia. I got back to Phuket and had access to my laptop just recently after spending some times on an off-season break with my love ones. Thank you my family, coach Jurgen Zack, friends and my sponsors for supporting me throughout this process and hard times. Thank you very much all for making this race happen for me. Before the big day: I flew to Brisbane, Sunshine Coast 5 days before the race to have enough time to settle down and get used to the place. It took about 1 hour to drive from Brisbane Airport to Mooloolaba so we got there in the afternoon. I went to check out the beachfront and walked around the race area. The atmosphere was amazing with a lot more fit looking people walking around than usual!! The next day I went to try the most tricky part of the bike course. The hill wasn't too bad but I knew the wind and quite technical descents would give me some problems.Thank you P'Jaray, P'Oat, P'Boyd and P'Noey for squeezing in another bike in the car and taking me to the course (and so sorry that we got lost haha). Then the rest of the week was trying to relax, such as checking out aquarium and drinking too much coffee etc.... The parade of nation was full of spirit! It was really fun to talk to triathletes from other countries. Also I ran into UK friend from good old Leicester triathlon club too!! Guess sport makes the world a smaller place =D การเดินพาเหรดของนักกีฬาที่เป็นตัวแทนจากประเทศต่างๆถือเป็นประเพณีของการแข่งขัน World Championship นักกีฬาจากประเทศไทยเรามีหกคน พี่เรย์ พี่โอ้ต พี่ตั้ม พี่อุ้ย พี่ปิ๊ก แล้วก็ณิค่ะ เดินไปถ่ายรูปไป ทักชาตินู้นชาตินี้ สนุกมาก และได้เจอเพื่อนจากเลสเตอร์ที่มาจากประเทศอังกฤษด้วย Being close to the race venue was handy!! I woke just just before 5 am then went down to the transition to pump up my tires and put the nutrition bag on. There was not much to mess about as all other gears were in the transition bags anyway. I definitely disliked having to wait until 8.15am and see all the guys (and other ladies) went off from 6.35am! I would hide no surprise here and put up the summary first, "It was a very tough day for me, not a good swim, awful on a bike but acceptable run". The swim did not really go according to plan as I couldn't catch good feet from the beginning and most importantly, wetsuits never agreed with me for some reason. People go faster with wetsuit but that has never been the case for me. It always seemed to slow me down by minutes on all races so far to date. The sea was nice and flat with little waves which I was very thankful for! I came out of the swim feeling disappointed by the time, plus seeing that most of the bikes were already gone didn't help. It was very hard to remain focus but I tried my best to leave it all behind and rode on. I had a tailwind on the way outwards to the high way turning point which of course meant "headwind" coming back in!!! The wind was very strong but lets save that statement to the very end....... I found the steep hill ok but the wind on the way back was just epic! The condition got worse and worse as the day went. I usually ease off already last 5 km on the bike to prepare myself for running but I thought I would probably never get there if I do that so I push on hard. Survived the bike, felt absolutely wrecked and probably not gonna win anything anyway....so I might as well stop for the portaloo in T2 in order to to avoid anymore discomfort and make this race a little bit more pleasant. I thought won't be able to put out a decent run and the course was hard with an incline out and that gruesome long slow decent which I had to climb back up, twice! Angel and Devil thoughts were debating fiercely in my head. "Why put yourself through this?? It's point less..There is no need to run hard, you are not winning anything anyway. You already screwed up from the swim", the devil said. However, the stronger angel fought back, "No, you came here to put your very best until you cross the finish line. See how far you can from last year? Shut those evil thoughts up and run" and of course she won! So I fought to the very end, almost cried on the last hill before the finish line. It was only less than 3 km to go, I couldn't slow down...I wouldn't dare to but my legs were so tired and I felt absolutely sh*t!! I gritted my teeth and ran my heart out.....and I crossed the line, finally!!" It wasn't the "performance" but again it was a very good experience and I made a very good progress from last year. Now I'm back to work after the chest infection last week T^T so will just ease off into training slowly. I am looking forward to get my fitness back after the break and build up a good base over the next many months to achieve better results for the 2017 races. I still have a lot of work to do to restore the muscle balance in my hips that affects my running because of compensatory gait from many injuries last year. It is important to get this right as soon as possible for the better future but good news is I will be racing in Phuket in November!

Leading up....."Learnt it the hard way!" Definitely took me sometimes to recover back from the past two races and to get motivated again for training. I now realised "Over doing" could take a lot more out of me both mentally and physically than I thought.....I was left with fatigue for quite some weeks and my right hamstring niggled a bit so I had to cut back some running miles. Furthermore, the excessive raining did not help with the situation either....but thankfully I had some great help from lovely people to get me going.. (i.e. Chef Sasha, who helped me with pacing and taking me out for a fast run....until I "almost" cried"! haha) Anyway, even though it has not been as good as I wanted too but still good quality training was done! So lets get to Cebu... Again not so surprised that our flights were delayed on the way to Cebu. We didn't get to Cebu till late on Wednesday and were pretty drained. It was forecasted that it was going to be some big waves and strong wind coming on the race day! Swim Tried to squeeze into the front as much as possible with some help from Singaporean friends but guess I wasn't far up enough. I got a big sea of people in front all the way with no space to really erm.. "swim"! Combination of getting breast stroke kicks in the face, couple of smacks and massive waves made the whole situation felt like a washing machine but I tried my very best to get out of there as possible. Bike Thought I had a slow swim but I did not let that get me down, just had to make out the best out of whatever was left on the day. I tried to concentrate to ride well..nutrition and effort but the head wind was super strong, definitely stronger than it was last two years! It was very demorallising but everyone suffered the same situation. Even more challenging, this is the first time I rode neck to neck with fellow competition in my age group and possibly compete for the podium spot. I knew I had to be smart, held myself back to not go too hard and saved it for the run. However, I decided to "Zack-Attack" on the last 30km and dropped her. I knew I was not running too well recently and wanted to make the most out of tailwind.... "2 hour 47 minutes" it was, personal best on the course! ณิต้องทำใจเย็นๆและไม่รีบร้อน ไม่ขี่หนักเกินไปเพื่อเก็บแรงไว้วิ่ง แต่ก็ต้องไม่ให้เค้าแซงและทิ้งระยะไปไกลเกินด้วย สุดท้ายก็ตัดสินว่าใช้ลมท้ายให้เป็นประโยชน์ดีกว่า เลยโจมตีระยะ30กิโลสุดท้าย แซงทิ้งระยะไปเลย เพราะรู้ว่าช่วงนี้วิ่งไม่ดีเท่าไหร่ เลยใช้จุดแข็งสำหรับตอนนี้แก้ปัญหาเฉพาะหน้าไปก่อน และก็ได้มา กับ 2ชม47นาทีในระยะ 90กิโลเมตร ดีที่สุดที่เคยทำไว้กับคอร์สจักรยานที่นี่ค่ะ =D Run Definitely hard biking did take it toll on me but still it was worth it and looking back I would not change my game. It was the right thing to do as I could make up a lot of time. I was overheated for the first three kilometres, couldn't get my heart rate down and at one point thought "Oh shoot! I might not make it". Luckily with past experiences in the heat, I managed to calm down, cooled myself down with sponges and made sure I was well hydrated at all aid stations. Glad I managed to hold a steady pace and made it home with a podium finish, 3rd in 25-29 age group. Recap It was a really good race for me. I learnt to be aware of my weakness and how to use y strength. I also have made a very good progress so far with half-ironman racing as it was only a matter of surviving 90km on a bike two years ago. Definitely thank you to my coach Jurgen Zack for a big improvement on a bike and Sasha for Time-Trial training motivation/listening to me moaning getting drop on the hills (i.e. pedalling my ass off at max power after you on an oversized bike =P) Thank you all my sponsors, friends and family for your very kind and consistant support and understand that this is a long process and it takes time =') Extremely happy to be on a podium representing Thailand at the end of the day and most importantly, this race has proved I can come back even stronger! ดีใจมากค่ะที่สามารถนำถ้วยกลับมาประเทศไทยได้สำเร็จ และที่สำคัญที่สุดคือณิได้พิสูจน์ว่า ณิสามารถกลับมาแข็งแกร่งกว่าเดิมค่ะ "5.43hr in 2014, 6.04hr in 2015 after accident and 5.29hr in 2016" It's now time to continue with "Racing and Learning" so I am now in the last part of preparation for Ironman 70.3 World Championship in 2 weeks time and excited to be going to Australia soon!! It had been another extremely busy month for me, travelling around places with two races 13 days apart. After Danang 70.3 I came straight back to Phuket, spending only few days getting some proper rest and went back to training. Unfortunately, I underestimated how much time I needed to recover from the half-ironman race (plus travelling) and overdid it with the training (i.e. being naughty!).
The weather on the day was not on mysids either as the storm caused a lot of waves in the sea. I thought I was seasick from choppy swim and went on the bike feeling like throwing up...and for the first time "thinking" about pulling out from this race. However, I decided to continue on and managed to finish the ride. I knew something was not quite right on the run, my stomach played up and felt abnormally tired. Again, I thought about quitting at 4th Km on the run after having to stop four times but I was glad I didn't and brought myself to the finish line at the end. On the next day I was totally ill. I came down with a tummy bug (which I usually get when I'm weak...never really get coughs and cold like others haha) leaving me with no energy and spent the rest of the afternoon at home in bed. Luckily I felt much better and managed to start eating some food the day after. At least it did not ruin my time getting to spend with family! Well... guess I learnt it the hard way! I need to know my body's limit and appreciate the hard work it has been doing for me. It deserves quality rest or otherwise it will break down. Therefore from now on I will not be racing too many races close together and must take in the travelling factor into account, making sure I am not too tired and fully recovered. I would rather concentrate on quality of the race rather than quantity! As a result from this, I will sadly have to change my race schedule and go back to the original plan. This means pulling out from Hua Hin triathlon in August (as it is just 1 week after Ironman 70.3 Cebu) and concentrate on my performance in Cebu and Ironman 70.3 World Championship Moolooba Australia. Regardless, it has been an amazing month for me. A lot of progress was made with swim/bike/run and I also gain more experiences as a life of full-time triathlete. I will keep trying my best, enjoy my training, be happy, eat good food and hopefully be able to put out some more good races this year. Ironman 70.3 Danang was the race I had been looking forward to since I signed up for it last year. I wanted to use this race as a bench mark for my performance after four months of solid training coming back from rehabilitation and allowed to run on the road once again. Learning from my mistakes, I took very careful precautions with my training, especially with running. I listened to my body and my coach more (well...97% of the time not being naughty!). I learnt about the importance of doing the sessions properly and did not try to "smash out" all of them like I used to. I now understand that certain sessions were designed in certain ways on purpose, just like creating a piece of jigsaw, if I don't make the pieces in the right shape, they could not fit together to create a beautiful final picture! Towards the race...... It took couple of transits to get from Phuket to Danang (of which made me pray for my bike to show up at the airports haha). I spent Thursday as a travelling day and got to Danang in the late afternoon. The next day MonicaTorres, a pro-triathlete from Philippines (who has always been my idol! =D ) and I arranged to go for a short ride in the morning. Then I met up with my good friend Ironwoman Ling Er from Singapore and spent sometimes trotting around local market and tries some local food together. So I got to see a bit of Danang and tried some Vietnamese cuisine and Coffeeeeeee! Race day....... It is very unusual for me to have a good sleep the night before the race but I did this time. I woke up to my regular pre-race routine then headed down to the transition area to get my bike and gears ready. Trying not to feel nervous being around a lot of people and the crowded atmosphere wasn't easy. "Jellyfish" was the last word I wanted to hear as I had my first DNF in the previous race getting stung by these sea monsters. We were told jellyfishes here were the "friendly" one and they should cause no serious harm. I put a layer of Safe Sea suncream on before jumping in for the warm up and came back up with some good rashes on my arms and shoulders. Luckily P' Bank (Bikezone) and P' Nan (Puri) were nearby. P'Bank put another thick layer of Safe Sea on me and P'Nan bathed me in Vaseline, creating extra anti-jellyfish skin layer! There was nothing else I could have done differently leading up to the race so all I had to do were to trust my training, pace myself smartly and enjoy the day! It was tricky to enter and exit the water as the sea level was just above knee height for quite a distance. I lost some times there not sure if swimming or trying to run would be faster. I had a good swim for the day, concentrating on my strokes and techniques as well as swimming hard but not too hard! The anti-jellyfish skin layer kept me well protected up to the end going back towards the beach where I swam into some big ones. That was a great motivation to swim to the exit even faster! Of course, this time I did not (but almost) forget to take off my speedsuit before going out on a bike. The bike course was flat and straight forward with a small climb at the bridge. The road surface was very smooth too. I rode very steady, tried to pace myself well and made sure I saved energy to put out a decent run. I concentrated on how I felt and keeping a good cadence. I disregarded how fast other people were going or the AG position I was in as I was racing my own race to get the best out of me. I was also surprised that I could push a bigger gear on the day! It was tough on the way back with the head wind but I managed to finish my bike leg much faster than I thought I was capable of (and also my coach haha) and still felt fresh ready for the run. Feeling great at the beginning of the run and excitement of making it to the final and favourite leg of the race made me shot off too fast for the first few kilometres. I knew that was not a good move so I slowed myself down to a more decent pace. The strategies were to "listen to my body (not GPS!), keep light footed, relax my shoulder and stay well-hydrated". Again, I did not look at my pace and just kept running as light as possible, trying to make the least noise striking the ground. Reflecting back on the race as a whole, I did not feel rushed at any point and went with the flow. My body and mind were completely in-sync and I was with present. Thoughts in my head were my arms pulling the water, my legs pedalling, my feet turning on the ground and not much else. I hit the last two kilometres before the finish line then I started to visualise my parents waiting for me at the finish line. That gave me the mental strength squeezed out whatever was left in the tank towards the finish line! I was really surprised by the clock as I did not expected to get there that fast. I was very pleased with 5 hour and 14 minutes. I broke my previous personal best time in half-ironman distance by half an hour with personal best in all swim, bike and run splits too. Moreover, I found out later that I have set a new record for Thai woman at this distance!! Finally, I would love to say thank you to my parents, coach, friends and awesome Z-coaching training gang for supporting me and always keeping my head up through all rough times. Special thanks to Chef Sasha on nutrition input and running tips. Most importantly, a big thank you to my sponsors Skins Thailand, Rocktape Thailand, Avarin Shop, Kitbrix/Aquasphere via B&B Outdoor Sports and On Running Thailand for picking me up since I was in the dust and believed in me still. I am very grateful and honoured to be representing you guys. I am now spending sometimes getting a good recovery before racing again at Pattaya Triathlon next week. Apart from that I will just keep smiling, enjoy my training and try my best as always! =D And oh yes....celebrating the podium coming 3rd in my age-group over good food! ตอนนี้ก็ขอตัวไปพักผ่อนก่อนนะคะ แล้วเจอกันที่พัทยาอาทิตย์หน้าค่ะ แผนการในอนาคตก็ไม่มีอะไรมากค่ะ ยิ้มสู้ต่อไป มีความสุขกับการซ้อม และพยายามให้เต็มที่ค่ะ อ้อ แล้วก็ขอกินของอร่อยๆ ฉลองให้กับโพเดียม ที่สามในกลุ่มอายุด้วยค่ะ =P Cheerios, Nini Sorry for a late release of this second episode, which includes the important part....the "Race"! (จุดเริ่มต้น) Walking up to the swim start area and for the very first time racing, I felt very relaxed with no pressure on my back. The thoughts in my head were not about the actual race itself but lovely people who supported me and the happy times I had in the past. And I knew all gotta do was just to "trust my training, go hard and enjoy the race!". I lost lot of fitness due to unfortunate injuries/accident but I knew this was not the excuse not to get faster in the swim. Swimming is different to bike/run as it requires good techniques. The more "efficient" I could be in the water, the faster I can go without taxing my cardiovascular system. I knew I could work really hard to improve my techniques so I could still swim well despite being less fit. In training sessions, I focused on every single stroke, staying in tune with my body and working on my drills to target my flaws. I only concentrate on my own pace and progress in the pool. The lap times were starting to drop, weeks by weeks. The hard work always pays off. When I regained some of my fitness back. I couldn't believe how fast I was able to swim the race with the combination of better techniques and strength. I managed to swim a similar 1500m course in this race in 24 mins compared to 27 mins in Pattaya 3 months ago with another hand surgery in the middle! And thats a Personal Best swim for 1500m! (จักรยาน) I grabbed my new bike, "Manow" (means "lemon" in Thai), racing with him for the first time and ran out of transition. The best bit was I was riding for 20km and realised something was not quite right with my legs hmm..... I forgot to take off my speed suit from the swim. It was hanging half way down!! But anyway....... Running to the finish line......(วิ่งๆๆๆๆ เข้าสู่เส้นชัย) Running has been a tough one to swallow for me be cause this used to be my strength in triathlon. I had been in a shape where I struggled to hold 6min/km pace for just 10-15 mins after the accident. Last year I ended up having really bad runs in all the races. I sometimes felt really down and wanted to give up but I kept up the fight. I knew I was not so lean and held extra pounds of fats. Rather than sitting around in a cast, doing nothing and eating junks, I looked after my nutrition very well. Cutting down sugars and unnecessary carbohydrates along with doing gym exercises helped me to get much leaner. I ended up dropping 7kg after the cast came off! Aquajogging was also the key of my running performance in this race. This kept my running muscles activated so I did not lose the neuromuscular memory. It also strengthened my legs as I needed to work against the resistance of the water. In the race, I started off moderately and surprised with the splits of the first and second km....even more with the gap between my competitors behind! I really enjoyed running up the hills "Khao Sam Muk" as I found it both beautiful and challenging. The monkeys were really cute too!! However, I did not care about my competitors after all. My attitude this time was "this is my race and mine only". I must put out the best I had regardless, so I kept running hard, harder and the hardest I possibly could. I crossed the finish line with a personal best time in Olympic distance (and plus 2 km on a bike!) at 2 hours and 34 mins , with 48mins for 10km run. This was the fastest 10km run I put out in Olympic distance races so far and over the last 14 months too! Coming second in Thai elite racing was a big bonus and more than I could ever ask for at this stage.
Throughout these tough times, I have learnt how important it was to stay strong and always get back up regardless of how many times I fall down in life. True strength does not come hitting hard but to get hit and still standing tall without breaking down. The miracles really does exist but not from sitting around praying great things would happen. It requires a positive mind set, hard work and discipline. The most important lesson was learning to draw strength and positive energy from people around me. When I felt like I could not go on, I always thought about my parents, friends and family......smiley faces, kind words and hugs. If they believe in me, then I would be very stupid for not believing in myself. I am very lucky to have great support from lovely people around me. Thank you everyone so so so very much again for always being there. I would not make it this far without you guys! And the journey continues..... Lets rock and roll "Cha-am Triathlon" in 5 days!! My life had been in an absolute mess last year (2015) since I got hit by a motorbike while out cycling, just 5 days after passing the medical school final exam (i.e. becoming Dr. Ruttanaporn). I would like write a recap of what I have been through for the last three/four months and the rest of the details will follow in future blogs so stay tuned! Early November 2015.......... "Is this for real!?!".... back in a cast for the second time this year. Someone up there must be having way too much free time to joke around with me! After racing Pattaya triathlon in October, I went for a training run and had a very sharp pain over my 4th metatarsal of my right foot (just above the 4th toes). It was the same foot that was injured by the accident in April. My foot pain had been on and off over the past six months but this was new and completely different. Nothing was seen on an x-ray done in Phuket. However, the pain was really bad and up to a point where I could hardly walk. I decided to go back to Bangkok to get this problematic foot checked properly by MRI and a specialist surgeon. It was the right decision as the scan showed a stress fracture causing this new pain, also two of the foot bones (navicular and calcaneus) were still broken and inflamed from the accident as I had been running on them. The worst news was a non-union fragment (a small piece of bone that completely broken off and would not reattached to the main piece) in the front part of my heel bone and this could explain the odd pain that persisted in my foot and ankle. T^T I had to wear the "Air Cast" for 6 weeks to see if all the problems would settle down and resolve by this conservative treatment. It was still possible I would need another surgery to remove that broken bit of bone in my foot. This meant I had to give two Phuket triathlons a miss anyway, so I decided to have my hand operated on to remove the metal plate (I broke 5th metacarpal bone from the accident) at the same time so I could be back to training earlier.....but once again, disabled hand and foot. It was tough coming back to swim after the hand surgery. I was gutted as my training was going so well before but knew that I had to get it done because some important functions of my hand were lost, such as writing and gripping (the bike) firmly. However, I managed to get back into it much faster than I thought and won a podium spot by coming third at Phuket-tri-fest open-water swim competition, just 20 days after the surgery. That was the first time I ever wear a cast on the podium! I spent a lot of time in the gym, doing core work and gluteus exercises to keep my body strong. This would minimise the risk of injuries when I was ready to go back on a bike and start running again. I also had a lot of discipline with my diet and tried to get leaner by eating very healthy, of which I managed to drop 7kg from my weight 3 months ago. Then soon enough, I could start to do indoor biking and aqua-jogging....keeping me sane! Struggle to weight bear on my right foot for a quite period of time made my muscles very imbalance. After 6 weeks in cast, I started back by running on Anti-gravity treadmill. It was very difficult to trust my right leg again. The leg felt very weak and uncoordinated. I started to doubt "would I be able to ever run or even walk like before?". Running for just half an hour on the machine with some walking breaks was so difficult but I kept my concentration on my legs. The only way as to keep going! December had been a very tough month for me trying to get myself back together physically and mentally....to fully recovered as a "person". Most people saw me staying positive and kept smiling but behind the scene no one knew how many litres of tear I cried. It was a daily war with the devil voice telling me to simply just "give up" and I was very depressed. I spent a lot of time by the beach, listening to good music and meditate. My parents wanted to come over to keep me companied but I kindly denied the offer.... I knew I needed be alone and concentrated with working on myself, drawing the lost every back in. (Social medias were pretty much out of the way too!) I went back to Bangkok to visit home for New Year and was in much better shape inside out. On the first of January, my dad my mom drove me to the Lumpini park where I always love to go running.....and that was the first day I made it back on the road! ช่วงปีใหม่ก็พร้อมกลับไปเยี่ยมบ้าน รู้สึกดีขึ้นเยอะ ในวันปีใหม่คุณพ่อกับคุณแม่ก็ขับพาไปสวนลุมเหมือนแต่ก่อน และณิก็ได้วิ่งลงถนนเป็นวันแรก =') Thank you to my coach Jurgen, who reassured me I would survive a bike tour with my fitness level, riding from Bangkok back to Phuket in nine days. I managed to get some quality cycling miles into my legs for the season and well motivated to go back to the sport meeting new lovely triathlon friends. And of course, I have been training hard with good discipline after arriving back in Phuket. I was not sure if I would made it to Bang Saen Triathlon (Olympic plus distance), the first big race of the season later in February but I was in much better shape than we expected.
The last minute decision was to "go for it!" Stay tuned for the race report and how hard work pays off in the next part of my blog! A bit late to write about this but my life has been epically busy over the past 6 weeks, absolute madness! But yes, it would still nice to get some recap of the two last races of 2014 season, Laguna Triathlon Phuket and Challenge Phuket Triathlon. I was really lucky to be able to get granted a leave from the medical school to race back home in my country. They were very understanding and I am very grateful for this opportunity. I flew back from UK just a few days before the race....was not very ideal. I was very jet lagged and find it very difficult with the heat. I have been training in much cooler weather in UK (around 10C) so racing in 40+C was a challenge. Arrived at Outrigger Laguna Phuket Beach Resort and got a very warm welcome from P'Pat and her team from the hotel. Thank you very much for taking care of my family and me during the race weeks, plus the lovely tri-suit too!! Trying to recover from the travelling was not so easy. I was still a bit tired on the race day of LTP and the heat was not helping at all. But I know all I could do was my best... well on the bright side, I got to race! Did not have too good of a swim as there were so many people. I found it very hard to get my own space and was not swimming in a straight line, especially on the way back to the shore as the sun was directly in your face! Challenging to swim in the sea for the first bit and jumped into the lagoon for the next... very weedy at the exit :p The bike turned out to be a survival mission too as I have never ridden those hills before and with my limited bike handling skills...the turns were ermmm difficult haha. But I was glad I did not have to unclip for the hills and managed to get to the run safely. On the 3rd km, the course was though the golf course and OMG it was like a frying pan for me. I got really overheated, my hear-rate shoot up and head was about to explode. Then I met P'Gai (Witthaya) and he told me the aid station is just around the corner so I hanged in there.....otherwise I was deciding which was the best pond to jump in! Finished the race coming 3rd for Thai lady and 5th in my AG....I felt like it could have been better if I have better preparation but all I could say is I tried my best for the shape I was in. And the award party was fun!! =D I had 6 days to recover for the next race, CPT which was the half-iron distance. TOUGH! but guess muscular wise I was ok since I did not think I bike/run hard enough to have DOMS as the heat was limiting me. The week has been busy but fun meeting lots of new people, catching up with friends and coach, and joining Thanyapura for some group sessions. On Friday I also had a good time getting the filming for TV show, KalamareTV with coach Jurgen. We had good moments of teaching and erm... trying to stop me from laughing! [STAY TUNED FOR THE ON AIR!] I felt more ready for CPT than LPT......more settled and less jet lagged. However, the heat was still very tough for me. I had much better swim (probably because I got whipped by Jurgen) but found swimming in the lagoon very challenging today as it was hotter than last week. I was not even on a bike and I'm hot already?! I was on the wrong gear on the first big hill of th bike course, forcing me to unclip and definitely a turtle going up and down the crossing bridge! Sorry everyone behind :p The run was just HOT and HOT. I drank lots on the way and probably had hundred of sponges. Thank you everyone of my friends for supporting me on the course, especially P'Micky who managed to find me coke for the aid station where they did not have it and coach Jurgen for an extra sponge and motivational speech! I was very happy with my result of 5.57 hours. I did not even think I would be able to manage a sub-6 on one of the toughest middle distance triathlon of the world, especially in 41C! Perfect way to end the second season of triathlon. Thank you so much to my friends, family and everyone on FB page for your support. Every messages and kind words were very much appreciated (and Brownies too ka P'Micky). It has been an amazing journey to look back and see how much stronger I got over the past year. It has been a very long season for me and now it's time for me to go back to study for my exam. It will soon be over by the end of March. I'm looking forward to see you guys again soon and racing more at home next year!! Best regards!!! #demonlegs Very excited to started with as it was the "A" race of the season. It's the main one that I really want to do my very best. I have been working extremely hard over the past months and hopefully the effort pays off. Arriving back in Thailand just one week before the race and found it quite tough with the heat just running outside. Definitely didn't have enough time to adapt to the hot weather and humidity but nothing could be done so the only solution was to man up! Left for Cebu on Tuesday night so all the travelling could be done all at once and gave myself more time to settle in. Had a really bad jet lag for almost the whole week from UK, kept getting up before 5am and fell asleep before lunch. Later on during the week more people arrived. It was nice to see friends again and getting to meet many new people was fun. Finally it's the day! Didn't sleep well at all….very typical. Getting up at 1am is torturing, especially with the nerve running in your blood stream. Gave up at the end so just got off the bed and quietly rechecked my transition bag and made sure I got everything. Headed down to breakfast exactly at 4am, feeling absolutely sick but needed to squeeze food in…..one of the worst pre-race moments. Found myself in the deep blue water, once again waiting for the gun and asked myself "why am I doing this to myself again" but didn't have time to answer….. BANG! Game on! Remembered my coach told me to swim hard so I did. Managed to got a clear swim for a while then started to get stuck with slower men in the earlier waves. Ok… it's time for a proper sighting so I put my head up and all I could see was a field of swim caps then I thought "SHIT!". Tried my best to work my way through, it was quite a water fight and I ended up swim over people and smacking some. The best bit of the swim was definitely the sea life…lots of fish and corals definitely made it more enjoyable than dark cold water in UK. =P Telling myself Holly (my bike) was missing me to motivate myself to kept swimming hard and got out of there finally! Having to queued to get into transition was frustrating…arch so I ran in front of the guys and just fought my way in. (Sorry, for once I do not respect social rules) Saw Ling Er (super fast Singaporean triathlete) in transition then I thought my swim must be ok (I don't have GPS watch for swimming). Took Holly ASAP and ran after her. I think I was 20 meters behind her on after mounting, couldn't get through the bikes in the way front of me and I wasn't fast enough to follow her so she was out of sight after 5 mins. It was very windy on the way out and even worse reaching the M loop. Very strong headwind on the way out so I concentrated on rehydrating and gels then rode hard on the way back with help from the tailwind. The best part of the bike was definitely riding along with the guys because I got a very big cheers from young girls and women while passing them on the way back. Definitely lifted my spirit up especially when I was suffering from the heat and feeling rough from fighting the head wind. (I need to do this more often in the future races =P) But yes I did enjoy the bike very much, the scenery was beautiful and I was doing around 30kph in average (might not be fast for most people but this is good for me!). Got back to T2 to find out there were only 2 or 3 bikes around my area, which meant I must be doing ok. Put on my good old running shoes and shot off. Legs felt awful and super heavy. Struggling with 5.40min/km pace at the beginning and running up elevation made the whole situation worse. Kept going anyway as walking has never been my option since started running. #demonlegs were killing me and I was boiling from the heat. I made sure I drank lots of coke/gatorade/water and cool down at every single aid station, just to be very safe! I struggled only up to the first 10K where I found my legs again (or my legs found me) or it could be that I saw another lady running quite fast and she must have been only 5 mins behind so I had no choice and this was a RACE i.e. push until collapse before getting OVERTAKEN! Now I could drop my pace and felt much better. I ran stronger and stronger, reaching 18th Km without even realising this. Maybe I shouldn't have looked at my GPS as now a voice in my head was saying "3K is such a long way to go….who the f* runs 3K" hahaha Then I brought myself back to my training where I had to do 3K hell sprints off-bike to convince myself it's SHORT!! That was successful mental talk so I cracked on, did not drop the pace and yes the best part of the run was the sprint finish. :D Crossing the finish line was a wonderful feeling, especially when you got your PB, had an amazing race and knew you did give everything you have got. Sumiko Tan (another Singaporean triathlete) who came 3rd in our AG came to shake my hand and said to me "nicely done"! I love the spirit of the sport. Mom and dad found me just after and told me I was 5 mins off the podium. I was a bit gutted but definitely couldn't complain! This was only my second half IM after all…still a lot to learn. (and I'm 24 competing in 25-29 AG =P) So 5 hours 43 minutes to swim 1.9K, bike 90K and run 21K for me! การเข้าเส้นชัยนี่เป็นความรู้สึกที่สุดยอดมาก หลังจากการที่เรารู้ว่าเราได้ทำดีที่สุดแล้ว และยังได้ทำลายสถิติของตัวเองอีกด้วย สุมิโกะเป็นนักกีฬาอีกคนของสิงค์โปร์มาจับมือด้วยค่ะ เขาบอกว่า "nicely done" น้ำใจนักกีฬาที่เป็นจิตวิญญาณของไตรกีฬาจริงๆ และคุณพ่อคุณแม่ที่รออยู่ก็บอกว่า เฮ้ยห่างจากที่สามแค่5นาทีเอง กรี๊ดๆ เสียดายนิดหน่อย แต่แค่นี้ภูมิใจมากแล้ว เราแข่งครั้งที่สองเอง ^^ ยังต้องเรียนรู้อีกเยอะ ว่ายน้ำ1.9km จักรยาน 90km วิ่ง 21km ใช้เวลาทั้งหมด 5.43ชม :) There were 1+1 slots for my AG for the 70.3 World Championship so Ling Er who came 2nd took one and I decided to take the roll down. I felt like I deserved it after all from all the hard work and my time was solid enough (with top 5 AG finish in a big race!). I am very proud to be the first Thai lady to make it to this race! Finally I would like to say thank you very much for everyone's support, especially my both of may parents who make this possible and my coach, Jurgen Zack for pushing me real hard and and showing me what I could achieve. So for more fun …. my next races are ส่วนการแข่งขันที่กำลังมาถึง ช่วยเป็นกำลังใจให้ด้วยนะคะ ^^ - Weymouth Challenge Half (half-iron) 14th Sept 2015 - Phuket Laguna and challenge November 2015 และ ฝากเชียร์ 70.3 World championship Austria 2015 ในปีหน้าด้วยนะคะ Well "Easy" is definitely not one of the description of my life haha. I spent around 15 hours (or more) training on top of being a final year medical student. When I am sent for long rides, I usually take longer time to finish them as the roads around Leicester are not that great and most of the areas are hilly. As a mind of "perfectionist" I refuse to stop until the GPS says the number of Km I needed to do so I would stay out as long as it takes to finish them.
I was much weaker on the bike starting off triathlon as I have never ridden road bikes (or haven't been on any real bikes for years). There is the hill that I remembered I struggled with. At the beginning, I could barely ride up that hill…I meant almost dead effort! I used to hate all the hills. So this summer (when sun rises at 5 am)on the day I got sent out for a ride in the morning, I would set up my alarm clock no later than 5.30am (or sometimes even 4.30…depends on what time I need to be in at hospital) and deliberately choose "that" hill to climb. I did this for most of my rides. I knew it would take longer and more tiring but I want to be stronger….. and so I did. I never ask for things to be "easy" or just get the rides done but I want to crack the most out of it! Nowadays I embrace every elevation of the roads and sometimes say "where is the hill?!). Sometimes when I miss calculated the time in morning longer sessions, I did not have enough time to stretch, foam roll "AND" shower so… and must be changed to "OR". Foam roll and stretch are usually the winner……(my dirty little secret!) And yes make-up has moved to the bottom of priority list! ในบางครั้งที่นิต้องซ้อมยาวหน่อยในตอนเช้าแล้วกะเวลาผิด นิก็จะมีเวลาไม่พอที่จะยืดเส้น นวดโฟม "และ" อาบน้ำ ก็ต้องเลือกเอาละค่ะ 55 และยืดเส้นกับนวดโฟมก็จะมาก่อนเป็นส่วนใหญ่ (ไม่อยากเจ็บ) และการแต่งหน้านี่ไปอยู่ท้ายสุดเลยค่ะ :p Of course, getting up early to train does leave me quite tired during the day but once I get used to it then it's not so bad. Sometimes during lunch break I would quickly run home for 15 mins nap then back to the hospital haha This is usually refreshing enough for me to function properly in the afternoon (and evening sessions on some days). Most weekends are spent doing long rides and weekdays for shorter rides. I remembered riding up to 400 something km in one of the week haha Thank you Jurgen :p I honestly love all of them. I love to be out there living the moment. I rode through strong winds, pouring rains, fog, those hills (and potholes!)…I guess to be a good triathlete you need to be strong inside too not just outside. There tough conditions taught me to be brave and stay strong (plus bike handling skills!). This is very beneficial to racing conditions and everyday life. Lunch break to me is sometimes not really a break. If there is enough time and the session is short I would try to fit one in. I did my short run (6/7K) once and it was a very hot day. The plan was to leave my backpack with my friend, Alice while I went running and I would take my key so I could run home to shower then be back in time. However, Nini being nini…. I ended up forgetting my key in the backpack so I needed to run around hospital (dripping with sweat and in running shorts) to find my friend. The worst part was bumping into consultants I know and patients gave me very odd look! (well I guess the fact that I did not shower and spent the rest of the afternoon sitting in lecture was worse… haha) 55555 Despite all the training hours, mom was surprised by the fact that I have yet to fail any tasks or exams yet. I guess it is all about time management. The rest of the free time I have is spent reading (or catching up with work), cooking (and eating too much), seeing therapists, playing guitar, sleep (never later than 10pm!) and seeing friends. The plan from now is to keep working hard and playing hard as I always did. Well maybe I shouldn't say I am working hard because I love what I am doing so much…. for something to be called "work" it shouldn't make you happy, should it? I honestly think if I could fit all these madnesses in, then no one should have any excuses what so ever to exercise at least 30 minutes a day! Woke up at 4am, too excited to sleep well! Had breakfast then headed to the race. Arrived at 5ish to transition and spent another hour in there haha Nervous... Got ready and tucked myself in wetsuit at 6.40 then walked to the swim start. It was a sunny but cold morning. Always hate the feeling of cold water creeping into the back of the wetsuit and spreading over the body. I had to swim around just to warm myself up. Waiting for the gun to go is and will always be the worst part of the race. However, at this point I knew I did everything I could with my training and gave every session my best effort. It's just going to be another happy day of getting to do what I love (swim, bike and run!) for just a bit longer ;) Let's the game begins! I knew my swim time was not going to be that great with wetsuit. I'm not strong enough yet with my swimming style and wetsuit will make it worse as it does restrict my shoulders (cant turn them fast ><!). Decided I would not fight so stayed behind and let others go first to have a clear swim. Didn't go out too hard as I had a panic attack last time racing in cold open water and had a long bike + run to do so went at a comfortable pace thinking about technique (and tried to swim straight!) Got out of the water very disorientated and found that most of the bikes around me were gone OOPS! Tried to take out wetsuit as fast as I could, jumped on Holly and couldnt put my shoes on properly! Cracked on with the pedalling. It was such a beautiful day and I really enjoyed the ride. I did not feel that I was racing or pushing hard at all but surprised to start passing people...and thought this was a bit strange. Then I looked at Garmin, which showed the speed I was not expecting and did not think I could ever managed over 90K! For the first time in the race, I was enjoying the ride so much that I wished it was longer and felt sad coming towards the end..... Came into transition calmly and put my running shoes on. Glad I behaved and did not go out too hard at the start. Tried my best to hold the pace. The pain score in my legs were 20 out of 10 but all I needed to do was to keep going and forgot about it (like P'Nam said!). Last couple of miles was hell but I pushed through it to the finish line in 5 hours and 53 minutes! Very proud of myself to be able to swim 1.9K, bike 90K and run 21K today!! These include having to do my placement in Boston (hence travelling back and forth to/from Leicester, carried my training bike up there, training which started at 5am etc..), coming down with a bit of tummy bug and "almost" emotionally break down. I kept a short diary of what has been happening over the 14 days before my race. It has been hard but everything can be made "possible", if you are willing to work hard for your dream and stop making excuses of why you CAN'T. Finally, I would like to say thank you so much for everyone for the support. Thank you my friends who gave me the cheer and the shout on the day. Thank you coach Z for a massive improvement on my bike, gave me great advices throughout and kept me head in the game! Most of all thank you to the best parents, mommy and daddy who helped me out with everything, without you two this could not happen. Diary of 14 days before the race! 14 days to go... Had a crap 10K race today. Hot, feeling fainted half way through and couldn't hold up the pace :( very frustrating. Biked up to Water meads, lied down in the sun and felt better. Then bike chain jammed on the way back and couldn't get it out even with help from two men. So I had to carrying my bike for 2 miles to the main road and called dad for the rescue!! Had to get back to Boston in the evening. Very tired with travelling around and having to pack the old bike and trainers etc... Gosh! Not looking forward to next week. It is gonna be tough one but I told coach Z I'd try my best. Thursday plan would have to be moved to tomorrow as I might need to do the shift at 7am on Friday plus travel back to Leicester....keep that for the rest day then. Better be off to bed (19.30 at the moment haha) I will start riding latest 5.30am tomorrow, so knacked and dead tonight. Honestly feel like crying but don't have enough energy...Shit day. 13 days to go... Woke up just before 5am today and put coffee and banana in my stomach. Looking forward to the ride as the weather was nice. Went out early as I have be in the ward round at 9am. Haven't been out with the good old trek for ages, a simple aluminium frame with aerobars. Perfect roads, no cars no winds and dead flat....just what I needed after yesterday. Lots of time to think things through and asked myself a question "am I happy with what I'm doing?" and yes is the answer of course. I would rather be doing this than anything else in the world. It's all about the climb at the end, I will slip and fall.... that's certain but as long as I keep going I will get there. :) Mom and dad picked me up for the pool after I finished work. Had a good swim in the pool of Boston. Then had dinner at the pub with parents and Alice.... we ate massive with ice cream at the end too lol 9pm: gonna read couple of pages of the Brownlees and pass out. Didn't sleep too well last night. Hate this bed as it is not comfy. Got up just around 5am and couldn't go back to sleep so went out for a run but remembered the wrong pace :p tried to push at the end but missed it by 30s but at least it felt better than last week. Went in at 9am for the ward round and couple of lectures after. Then spent the latter half of the day attempting to study....bits and pieces of reading but not motivated. Felt very tired today all day. Hard to sleep well when I'm not in my usual place. Gonna go to sleep early again tonight as I'm very much looking forward to tomorrow's ride and will run after for 5K (and the sprint after that would be to the clinic!! Unless I don't shower hmmmm 11 days to go... Woke up at 4.30am today and headed out for a ride which was supposed to be two hours.... but took the wrong turn and costed extra 30 minutes. Had to pedal back fast to get 5k run in, otherwise would be late for clinic. The ride was lovely!! Saw a deer, a big fat cat and little rabbits. Almost didn't have time for shower lol. Made it to clinic just in time. It lasted from 9-5 and spent all day pulling funny faces at kids. Tired with sinus headache. It cleared off during the ride and run but got worse during the day. Tummy feels funny too. Hope I am not coming down with virus or sth :( oh well at least I survived the day! Tomorrow is the rest day and I set my alarm clock to 8! Bless me! 8pm: Friends went to pub to have some drinks. I wanted to go but so tired I could barely stay awake. Not feeling well at all! 10 days to go... Supposed to be a rest day but got broken down mentally. Informed med school that I might be sick after the race which they are ok about sorting out my exam earlier. But got asked by doctor here to come over for the weekend or do night shifts next week to substitute for the day I MIGHT be absented. Got very angry as this is very inconsiderate... it's not easy travelling between Leicester and Boston.... plus on top of training I have been doing. And also it's really mean as this is a long weekend and we have teaching in Leicester on Tuesday! Hard enough to fit everything around and now you want to rip off my recovery by night shifts and won't even give me time off during the day. Face it no one can stay awake for 24 hours and continues next day too?! Also the sick leave is a "leave" why would we need to do substitution?! It's tiring and stressful enough for me, I tried my best to get everything sorted before hand. Told the doctor I had been getting up at 4.30am to get my rides in and night shift will not be possible regardless and said if it's to be the case then I will drag myself in after the race. Luckily got it sorted at the end. 55 9 days to go... Woke up with a massive headache this morning. Not feeling well last night, got a tummy upset that woke me up 4-5 times. Felt really sick, threw up once :( Guess I caught some virus from kids! :( Have to give last long run a miss today and get rid of this thing ASAP! But felt much better during the day...lad it's not a full blown stomach bug. Stuff my trainers and everything else into my friend's car, heading back to Leicester in the afternoon. Finally got back to my own bed tonight and hope nothing else will go wrong. Extra rest day it is! 8 days to go... Had much better sleep last night. Forgot to bring skewer for the trainer back! Arghhhh = = ! Bought my boyfriend to the bike shop to get him unjammed. Luckily they had one spare skewer left for Tacx trainers so I bought that. Cracked on with my training on turbo as it was raining. Felt loads better today. 7 days to go... Started my day with 1.25hr on turbo and 8 K run... it was quite windy on the way back from my favourite canal. Asked coach Z about diet so I am going low carb after this session ... hence at ate almost a whole chicken after lol. Nic came round for a catch up and we baked for Steve's party. Lovely to see people at the party. Felt very refreshed after the tough week. Back to my old happy self again today. Looking forward to ride the course tmr. Had bacons, sausages and eggs this morning. Went up to Nottingham to ride the course. It was sunny in the morning but got cloudy and rained around 12ish. Did try to follow the course but ended up with wrong turns (how typical) and ended up on high way arghh scary!! Got back on the course at the end and ride bits backwards and back again. Ended up driving other parts due to time and weather. Got back and cleaned Holly. Tired and not looking forward to tomorrow's teaching... oh well at least it's in Leicester lol. Felt much better today after good night sleep at home! 5 days to go... Got to the pool at 6.30am on the dot as teaching started at 8.30. Took me less than 50 mins to finish the session so had some spare time for shower!! Finished teaching at half 11. Went to do some food shopping then see the therapist at 2pm. Spent 2.5 hours screamed myself away while getting my joints sorted. Adductors, abductors, quads, joints and even pec major! You name it. Gonna be sore tomorrow. Then parents drove me back to Boston at 7ish, extremely tired so slept soon after. 4 days to go... Woke up at 5.30am, not the best sleep but not the worst either. Made the right decision of bringing my pillow here. 4th day of low carb was making me feel rather crap and craving for it all the time. Almost grabbed some cornflakes from a 2yr old on the wards. My day started at 7am today so kept the session for the afternoon. Went in to see babies and ward rounds. Finished off paper works and did some reading later on in the day before brick session. Legs were still sore from yesterday. Set up turbo and get on with it as it was cold and rainy today plus bloody windy. Last hard working brick! Had to keep the door half open as room was too hot. A flatmate who was a medical student from Nottingham knocked on my door and asked if I was ok while I was on max out effort lol #satisfied. Almost fainted on the run pushing hard... Guess that's last bit of glycogen remained since Sunday. Then stuffed my face with loads of food and sugar. Now very tired and sleepy....coudln't even move lying in bed. 3 days to go... Did my clinical exam in the morning and finally got to come back to Leicester in the afternoon :) Glad to be back as a good night sleep is guaranteed (actually last night was ok :p). Felt full all day from carbo loading... Carb faceeee! Did a short recovery swim and nothing much. Which is good!! 2 days to go... Rest day!! Woke up late at 7am with a good night sleep in my own bed. Eating and sitting around then packed all the stuff and got down to Nottingham. Went to registration at the race site and back to the hotel for more rest. 12 hours to go... Woke up almost 8 today, surprisingly slept very well. Went to the race site then do an easy ride and run then race brief. Got everything set up for tomorrow. Well just another day of what I have been doing, swim, bike and run. :) Sitting and chillaxing in the hotel bed now.... ready to ROCK and ROLL!
